German artist Gabriele Undine Meyer took 16 digital images per day for one full year (May 2008-May 2009), then combined them via transparent layers to create three series’ of work: “Hazy Days”, “Light Days”, and “Dark Days”. The series Hazy Days gives a beautiful impression of painting through photography. The images of Light Days are quite transparent, thus giving a translucent quality to the many layers. Dark Days is a look into the darker side of daily life. This new group of works by Meyer seeks to give an impression of the complexity of everyday life, the thousands of layers of perceptions that humans experience during a single day. The pieces serve to remind us of the little moments, hidden secrets and undercurrents of life that we would normally ignore, opening a world of forgotten treasures that can be rediscovered whenever they are looked at anew. FROM THE PRESIDENT

  

 1.  Spring Show:   19 pieces were sold last weekend, averaging about $140 each.  Pretty decent for a holiday weekend.  Please get your replacements in on Saturday.  The show is looking a little empty.  (these are the kinds of problems we like to have)

 

2.  Summer Show:  Art in Changing Perspectives:  Acceptance letters will be sent out this week (if the envelope delivery comes in time).  Below is a show description by Show Chair, Anna Hagen.

You can take the theme literarily and explore the possibilities of  having the object in front of the picture plane or behind the picture plane, or you can work by giving the viewer a distinct impression of distance not in the ordinary sense, but creating an optical illusion with color or line that illustrates perspective changes.

 

Or you can take the title to mean changing points of view either by direction, or by subject matter, or by dictum.   An unusual point of view from the top looking down or from the floor looking up, or the inside looking out or from the back looking forward.  There are many possible interpretations, each personal to your own personal universe that you will create for this show.

 

For artists looking to explore the theme a little further, the 200’s Bay will be exhibiting Art to the EDGE,  – a less formal and more versatile way for you to present art work.  You can decide how and what works you would like to show.

You can exhibit more than one discipline – drawings, watercolors, and oils; sculptures and drawings.  It is more an installation than regimented hanging.  You are free to hang your panel in any manner that you like – or chose not to use a panel and hang your work from the ceiling. 

 

There will be very little supervision in Art to the Edge.  We will just try to help you implement your ideas.  Your imagination is your only limitation.

 

This show will be a wonderful diversity of creative ideas, as well as presentation.

 

Since we have only three weekends between shows, we are planning on having a couple of week night Site Prep shifts on Thursday/Friday, June 18/19 from 5:00 to 8:00PM, the same time that we have week night Checkout for the Spring Show.  You will receive a 50% bonus for working these shifts.  If you are interested in working, you can just show up.

  

3. Weekly Craft Fair in Conjunction with the BWAC art exhibits:  Until or unless NYCreates gets funding for this fair, BWAC will organize a weekly Craft Fair on the esplanade at 499 Van Brunt.  It will be open on the same days and times as the BWAC art shows. BWAC will not charge any sales commission.  The NYCreates tables, chairs, umbrellas and stands will be available on a first come/first served basis.  The Craftspeople will be responsible to take out and return all supplied materials like carts, tables, chairs…Setup will be from 10:30 to noon each day.  Take down will be from 6 to 6:30 each day.  The Craftspeople will be responsible for collecting and paying all sales tax. The Craftspeople will have to join BWAC and pay the $100/calendar year membership fee as well as $20 in cash each weekend they participate.

MEMBERS’ NEWS

“Other Visions, Other Rooms”, an art exhibition of Brooklyn artists (including six BWAC Artists)

Artists in Brooklyn command a unique place in the world and our borough hosts one of the highest concentrations of resident artists anywhere. The artists selected for this exhibition have a history of living and being informed by the world around them combined with a dedication to their vision.  The choice of artists reflects wide ranging points of view as well as varied styles and materials. This variety is the natural outgrowth of artists whose work does not reflect the current trends so much as their own belief in following “inner”  instead of “outer” career directions.  Among the exhibitors are Audrey Anastasi, Joseph Anastasi, C. Bangs, Anders Knutsson, Leon Nicholas Kalas, Louise P. Sloane, Stephen Basso, Ellie Winberg and Mauricio Morillas and Dan Marino.

The exhibition space is set in dramatic custom town houses, featuring 18 foot ceilings; the works reflect the newly emerging spirit of Brooklyn amidst the historic Red Hook neighborhood backdrop.  This exhibition has been sponsored by Prudential, Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Brooklyn, NY and curated by Leon Nicholas Kalas, a Brooklyn Independent curator.

I would like to extend an invitation to Lucky Gallery Open House to celebrate the re-opening of Lucky Gallery in Red Hook, Brooklyn on Saturday, May 30 from 6 to 9pm.  The celebration will continue into Sunday with the first weekly “Lucky Sunday”, a series of events which will include food, drink, artist talks, performances and workshops at Lucky Gallery.

 

For the opening, Lucky Gallery will be featuring an exhibit called 5”x 5” @ $5, which is a collection of photographs taken with plastic cameras.  All photos are 5” x 5” and available for sale for $5 each. The exhibit will run from May 30 to June 30, and will be hung with wire and clips in such a manner that all visitors can freely rearrange how and where they are displayed. All work will be replenished as it is sold over the month, creating an ever-changing environment.

 

Lucky Gallery will be open weekends from 1 to 6 and is located at 176 Richards Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York. Lucky Gallery works with underrepresented and emerging artists looking for a venue to share creativity and ideas in a supportive environment. Studio space available at the Court Street Clay Studio.

 

A share in the space is available for $500 a month including basic electric, not including firings, and carting fees for garbage. The studio is the first floor and the basement of a building on Court Street between 9th and Garnett Streets in Brooklyn, close to the F and G trains. It is wired for up to three kilns.

 

While the space is designed for clay work, artists working in other media are welcome.  A total of four shares must be filled by the end of May to begin by July 1.  One month rent and one month security is required to hold a share.  Checks will not be cashed until all shares are rented and not before June 15.  Rent for August and subsequent months would be due the 15th of the month prior.  You may share your space with another artist

After a wonderful opening weekend, I have some very sad news to report.  BWAC member, Brian Young passed away last week.  Even if you only knew Brian a little, I’m sure you recognized what a smart, kind and talented guy he was.  His paintings were humorous, sensitive, and masterfully executed.  We will really miss him.

Brian’s friend Jonathan Stone sent us the following information and asked us to share it with the BWAC member:

(March 18, 1967 – May 7, 2009)

Brooklyn, NY: Thursday, May 7, 2009. Age 42. He is survived by his parents, Lysle and Hedwig Young of Webster; brothers, Daniel (Diana) Young of GA; Gary Young of Rochester and Greg Young of Webster; aunts, uncles and cousins. Brian was a painter and a poet. He graduated from Webster High School and Syracuse University.

His family will receive friends on THURSDAY 7-9 PM at the funeral home. On FRIDAY please join his family at Peace of Christ Parish at St. Ambrose Church (25 Empire Blvd.,Rochester) for his Funeral Mass at 12:15 PM.Contributions may be directed to bwac (a non profit organization for artists) c/o OHM, 76 Degraw St., Brooklyn, NY 11231.

1.  Spring Show:  Opening Day saw lots and lots of people.  The show looks wonderful.  Our thanks go to Dawn, Scott and everybody who worked so hard to make it such a success.

 

67 pieces were sold (as compared with 60 last year’s Opening Weekend), however the total dollar sales were down by 40%.  We are feeling the economy. 

  

2. Weekly Craft Fair in Conjunction with the BWAC art exhibits:  Until or unless NYCreates gets funding for this fair, BWAC will organize a weekly Craft Fair on the esplanade at 499 Van Brunt.  It will be open on the same days and times as the BWAC art shows. BWAC will not charge any sales commission.  The NYCreates tables, chairs, umbrellas and stands will be available on a first come/first served basis.  The Craftspeople will be responsible to take out and return all supplied materials like carts, tables, chairs…Setup will be from 10:30 to noon each day.  Take down will be from 6 to 6:30 each day.  The Craftspeople will be responsible for collecting and paying all sales tax. The Craftspeople will have to join BWAC and pay the $100/calendar year membership fee as well as $20 in cash each weekend they participate.

MEMBERS’ NEWS

From John B. Conroy:

Attention all artists – especially those who have web sites.  This is to inform you of a  banking and mail fraud (scam) targeting artists.

Several of us have been contacted by a Susan Miles, representing herself as a potential client.  After negotiating with you to purchase some of your art, she advises you that she and her husband are moving to South Africa, and she is in Texas expecting a baby.  Susan ‘freight forwarder’ may event contact you about picking up your art. 

Susan then advises that her husband has made a mistake and is sending both the payment of the art and for the services of the ‘freight forwarder.’  She asks you kindly to cash the check take your fee and send a check to the freight forwarder.  At this point hit the delete button, your potential client is a scam artist.

Do not be fooled – this is a basic scam, and the check that you received will be ‘stopped paid’ and you will eventually owe your bank the full amount of the check.  I have contacted the nation US Postal Service’s Fraud task force and am waiting for further feedback since in today’s mail I received the check.  If you receive a check, do not cash or deposit it.  If possible, do not touch the check since there may be finger prints that could be identified.  When receiving such a request from someone you do not know, first insist on the person’s phone number and address.  This would allow you to track the person and the request; if the request is a scam, most likely you will not hear further from this party.

 Even if your bank tells you that the check has “cleared’ the scam artist has 30 days from the receipt of their bank statement to stop payment on this check, and this is how they get their money.  If you mail them your check or send them your art, you will loose the value of your art and/or be responsible for the entire check amount that you received.

If you receive another Email from this party – hold your temper – and hit the delete button.  Do not respond further.  Instead, Contact the national Postal Inspector’s office at 1-877 876 2455, prompt # 4 for the Fraud taskforce; or go to www.usps.com/postalinspectors .  If you call in the AM you may reach a live person. Please do this if in any way you have been further involved financially.  Request that they send you a complaint-filling package and so you can enclose all Emails, check etc.   

The US Postal Inspector’s office is interested in all fraud complaints and they will direct you accordingly.  Even if you don’t receive a check and had deleted this scam, you are encouraged to file a complaint through this website listed above, or you can go to www.ic3.com , which is a liaison group with the FBI and white collar crime enforcement.  Also, you can look at www.fakechecks.org for additional information.

I am writing to you about a project that I am working on for MARP’s 10th Anniversary.  We are beginning the process of putting together a community archive of Myrtle Avenue, focusing on the neighborhoods of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, that captures the past, present and future through oral histories, images, original artwork, collage, found objects, personal artifacts, photographs, handwritten documents, stories, recordings, creative interpretations, receipts, menus, and mappings of life on Myrtle Avenue. 

This archive will become a ttime capsule representing the past, present and future of Myrtle Avenue’s public life in order to preserve it for future generations. In September, the contents of the time capsule will be displayed either at the Brooklyn Historical Society or in a space somewhere in the Myrtle Avenue community as a celebration of Myrtle and MARP’s 10th Anniversary. 

As Brooklyn-based artists I am reaching out to you for your ideas and creative contributions to our time capsule. Whether you have or would like to create an artwork for this project or have items/photographs/stories etc. that you would like to contribute as well.

CLASSIFIEDS

Studio space available at the Court Street Clay Studio.  A share in the space is available for $500 a month including basic electric, not including firings, and carting fees for garbage. The studio is the first floor and the basement of a building on Court Street between 9th and Garnett Streets in Brooklyn, close to the F and G trains. It is wired for up to three kilns.  While designed for clay work, artists working in other media are welcome.

440 Gallery is hosting “Brooklyn” a themed exhibition capturing places, events and people related to the borough of Brooklyn, New York. The exhibition will run Thursday, June 25th, through Saturday July 25, 2009.

The juror for “Brooklyn” is Florence Neal, the co-founder (1990) and director, of Kentler International Drawing Space in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Ms. Neal is also an artist and her work, along with several public art commissions, is presented in local, national and international venues.

Owned by BWAC member Dawn Robyn Petrlik, and home to an ever-increasing roster of rescue animals, Rosemary Farm needs your help! 
Everything needs to be done. We are extending a work exchange option for a visit this first summer only, so you can spend half the day 
helping out on the farm, and the rest of your time painting, drawing, enjoying the breathtaking Catskills countryside. 1.  Site Prep:  We still need help Thursday and Friday.  We want to get all the painting done before the weekend, so that there is no wet paint interfere with registration and installation.  We will be working both days from 10 – 6PM.    Please come if you’re free and put in as many hours as you can.  

 

2.  Flyer Distributors needed. You will get 6 or 12 hours work credit for this job.  We expect you to find four stores and give them each ~40 flyers per hour.  This work credit can be used toward this show or future 2009 shows.  We want one person in each neighborhood.  Call Jane at 718.596.2506 to see if your area is available and get more details.

 

3.  Spring Show:  If you haven’t yet scheduled a time slot to bring in your work, please go to http://www.bwac.org/schedule/signup.php, and follow the directions to register. Registration/Installation days are April 25/26.  Each day has four time slots: 11 to12, 12 to 1, 1 to 2, 2 to 3.  .  Once a time slot is filled, it is no longer displayed.  If you reserved a time slot last year, the system will still have your information.

The Effects of the Recession on BWAC

 

The most lasting contributions of the Great Depression were the roads, buildings, and the work of artists. Artists including writers, musicians, actors, dancers, as well as fine artists, reflect moments of hardship but also illuminated what can be or should be. We need to provide this unique form of guidance again under the current circumstances.

 

We fear that sales and outside contributions may decline severely during 2009.  The exact amount, of course, is unknown. To compensate, the expense budget is being cut wherever possible without sacrificing the integrity of our shows which are the lifeblood of the organization and the members. But in order to weather the crisis there are many ways you can help:

 

·        Please re-new or re-join BWAC.

·        If you have friends or relatives who would benefit from membership, please encourage them to join.

·        Ask friends and family to make a tax-deductible donation, big or small.

·        If you have any ideas to increase revenues or stimulate greater interest in our shows or simply wish to propose any idea in general, please share them.

·        Please volunteer to assist BWAC. Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes and there is much to do for the organization beyond the work entailed in putting on shows.

·        Make a really big effort to tell everyone you know to come to the BWAC shows.

·        If you have a website or a blog please indicate that you are BWAC member and possibly highlight our show and efforts.

We received the sad news of Priscilla Bain Smith’s death. 

 

We will remember her as an excellent artist, knowledgeable art historian, and an art administrator for BWAC and the founder of the Artists Speak series.  But most of all, we will remember her as a wonderful person and friend.

 

We will miss her dearly.

 

Our sincerest condolences to Janice Jacob, Priscilla’s sister and long-time BWAC member.

 

1.  Site Prep Emergency:  Last weekend we fell very far behind, as only one person had shown up by 11AM on Saturday.  We now need every carpenter and sheet rock person possible.  We are extending the six hours credit for four hours work through Saturday, April 11.  We are working from 9AM to 3PM each day.  Work any four hours and get six hours credit.   (No wall painters needed this Saturday). Heavy lifting is required.  Come prepared to work hard and get dirty.  If you’re a carpenter, bring your tools.  No sign up is required; just come in if you’re available.  If you’ve already completed your 18 hours for the Spring Show, additional hours can be applied to the other two shows.

Please note that this year due to our economic situation no lunch will be served, so please come prepared   I will make coffee.   

 

2.  Spring Show:  Spaces are still available.  Acceptance letters were mailed!  They contain all the information you need for exhibiting in the Show, including the procedure for selecting a time slot for bringing in and hanging your work on April 18/19/25/26.  Each day has four time slots: 11 to12, 12 to 1, 1 to 2, 2 to 3.  Please go to http://www.bwac.org/schedule/signup.php, follow the directions to register and reserve a time slot. Once a time slot is filled, it is no longer displayed.  If you reserved a time slot last year, the system will still have your information.

Rockaway Artists Alliance is looking for art submissions for our exhibit Geometric.www.rockawayartistsalliance.org for entry forms and details.

Parallel lines and pyramids, boxes, cubes, circles or squares, or any other geometric designs, patterns or shapes form the theme of this show. Media may include photography, writing, film, painting, digital art, sculpture, mixed media and more. Non-objective and abstract art as well as traditional art are all open to bold new twists on familiar lines. All are invited to submit their most interesting and expansive variations and ‘color outside the box.’

Congratulations to Anthony Almeida best in show “Water”

H2O was the artist formula for Gallery 364’s theme of the month show and sale – “Water” — framed inside the entire first floor of an historic brownstone house on the residential tree-lined block of 72nd Street in Bay Ridge, a destination and home to the area’s growing art colony.

There was a contest for the best in show and honorable mention, a feature of the gallery founded in April 2007 by professional photographer Georgine Benvenuto. Making those waves were two winners. One of these was “Fire Hydrant Frenzy,” a black-and-white photograph taken in 1969 by Anthony Almeida of children splashing in the hydrant’s spray.

The Portrait: Painted and Personal curated by Robin Ross, and Giustina Surbone.  This exhibition presents the viewer an opportunity to see beyond traditional portrait painting.  Exhibiting artists include Nana Deleplanque, Robin Gaynes-Bachman, Audrey Anastasi, Robin Ross and Giustina Surbone.
 
The gallery is located a few short “R” subway stops beyond Park Slope, at 224 48th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Brooklyn.
 
Transportation: From Manhattan, “D” or “N” express train to 36 Street in Brooklyn, cross platform, and take “R” train one stop to 45th Street.  Street parking is available.
