Call for photographers for stock agency collaboration:

I am looking for all photographers interested in submitting works to my new online stock agency.  All photos will be copyright protected (your copyright) and watermarked.

Advertising agencies, businesses, collectors, art lovers, the general public, basically any user of the internet, etc. will have the opportunity to buy your works royalty free for usage in ads, the internet, newspaper, billboards, etc.  Additionally, the website provides the ability for interested parties to purchase prints from a professional print lab.

You take 65% (I said 60% last week – sorry) of the sale which is significantly higher than what the traditional stock agencies pay out.  There is the ability to set your own prices or you can utilize our global pricing model.  This is an excellent opportunity to showcase some or all of your work.  I am working on major publicity, advertising, my network of creatives and industry professionals, and search engine optimization and management firms to get you recognized and funded.

Please get in touch with Dan Marino | dan@danmarinophoto.com | (917) 207-2091 if interested.  Looking for all category submissions at this point in time.

Hello to all BWAC artists from the cool Catskills! We still have some space this summer and fall for pioneer artists-in-residence at  Rosemary Farm. This farm is the new property of Dawn Robyn Petrlik (spring show chair) and will eventually be a full fledged artist’s retreat and horse rescue, but it is still in the process of being converted. Special invitation for BWAC members to come and experience the farm for free. The basic proposal is this; you work half the day (morning or afternoon) and then you can create art for half the day.  Contribute towards food, both buying and making. There are a variety of jobs that need to be done here and a myriad of beautiful places to paint, draw, photograph, or just enjoy. We have horses, hickens,
roosters, rabbits, dogs and cats on the farm as well. Please write for more details and to discuss available dates.

Dates:      Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, 2009
Theme:  This mural is intended to feature the diversity of visual arts produced by Brooklyn-based artists in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and vicinity, and the diversity of the neighborhood itself.

Scope:  The mural will be painted on both the Lincoln Road and Flatbush Avenue temporary construction fences surrounding the stalled “tower project.” The fencing consists of particle board sheets and is divided into several panels approximately 7 feet wide X 8 feet high.

Each artist will be assigned one panel. Consideration will be given to requests for larger spaces, but we can not guarantee to honor such requests.

PLG Arts will  prime the fence with white acrylic primer, photo-document the process and artwork, and provide up to $30.00 reimbursement for materials for those who provide receipts dated between August 1st and September 12th, 2009. We apologize, but will be unable to reimburse anyone who does not provide receipts.

Please note: This is not a paid commission, but rather an opportunity for artists who reside in the community to make a positive impact in the neighborhood through their art. There is no honorarium or other remuneration for participation in the project beyond the materials reimbursement noted above.

Restrictions: The only conditions imposed by the owners of the construction site are that the mural’s content and flavor will not be offensive to any person or group. It is also understood that neither Park Tower (the owners) nor PLG Arts will be responsible for any damage to the mural.

The mural will be temporary in nature because construction could resume at any time and, in any case, the particle board fence will eventually deteriorate. We think that the ephemeral nature of this project is a plus-not a drawback.

If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Robert Marvin immediately at: bmarvin@plgarts.org or phone 718.284.3224

PLG Arts promotes the arts, supports local artists, and builds community through celebrating the vibrant creativity of Prospect Lefferts Gardens and the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods.  The PLG Arts Community Mural Project is funded in part with a grant from the Citizens Committee of New York City.

IMPORTANT DATES

July 2/3              Hanging/Installation Days, 2:30 to 7:30

July 5:                Artists Proof Day, 12 to 3PM

July 11:              Opening, Art in Changing Perspectives, with music by The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn

FROM THE PRESIDENT

1.  Flyer Distribution:  We need to have more flyers distributed by our members.  We still have over thousands and thousands of flyers to be distributed.  If each person takes 200 and spreads them out to six coffee shops or stores, we’ll match the Spring Show’s distribution – and that brought in more visitors than last year’s.

2.  Summer Show:  Art in Changing Perspectives Extra Registration Days:   If you have not put up your labels and/or finished hanging your work, please come in Thursday and/or Friday 2:30 to 7:30.   Also, we’ve noticed that some people have not even turned in their Artwork Registration form or accidentally brought it back home.  If we do not have your form, we cannot make labels for your panel or include you in the Artists’ Directory.  Please bring in your form if you haven’t already on Thursday or Friday, if possible, or Sunday, the latest.

3.  Summer Show still has space available:

  1 — 8′ x 8′ panel,

  1 — 6′ x 4′ panel,

  2 —  5’x5’ panels and

7+ areas for sculpture (including ~ 20 pedestals)

Installation will be this Thursday and Friday, from 2:30 to 7:30 (leaving at 8 sharp, so come as early as possible).

If you are not in the Summer Show yet, you will have to do two work shifts.  If you are already in the show, you will have to pay nothing for sculpture, $30 for a small panel or $50 for the 8′ x 8′ panel.

If you have sculpture, just bring it in and we will find room for it.

If you would like one of these panels, email Anna Hagen (Krupis@aol.com) with the size of your artwork and include images so she can have your panel reserved for you before you arrive (she will notify you Wednesday night about what to bring in.)

4.  Auction Work Wanted:  The auction wall is looking kind of sparse.  Even if you’re not in the show, we would appreciate a piece or three.   You can bring them in this Thursday, Friday and Sunday or Wednesday, Thurday, Friday of next week.

5.  NEA Great news!

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a $15 million increase for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for FY 2010.  Currently funded at $155 million, this increase would bring both agencies’ budgets to $170 million.  Please take two minutes to write to your Senators and urge them to support this important funding increase!

Thanks to the arts leadership of House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Norm Dicks (D-WA) and Congressional Arts Caucus co-chair Louise Slaughter (D-NY), this House-approved funding increase for the NEA exceeds President Obama’s budget request by $8.7 million and is the highest proposed appropriation for the NEA since its $176 million peak in FY 1992. On June 25, corresponding legislation in the Senate Appropriations Committee set NEA and NEH funding at only $161.3 million each.

Next Steps:

We must now put pressure on the Senate to match the funding level set in the House of Representatives.  Please take two minutes to visit Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center to send a letter to your Senators.

If I don’t see you this Thursday or Friday, have a great 4th.

There will not be a newsletter next week.

Enjoy!

German artist Gabriele Undine Meyer took 16 digital images per day for one full year (May 2008-May 2009), then combined them via transparent layers to create three series’ of work: “Hazy Days”, “Light Days”, and “Dark Days”. The series Hazy Days gives a beautiful impression of painting through photography. The images of Light Days are quite transparent, thus giving a translucent quality to the many layers. Dark Days is a look into the darker side of daily life. This new group of works by Meyer seeks to give an impression of the complexity of everyday life, the thousands of layers of perceptions that humans experience during a single day. The pieces serve to remind us of the little moments, hidden secrets and undercurrents of life that we would normally ignore, opening a world of forgotten treasures that can be rediscovered whenever they are looked at anew. FROM THE PRESIDENT

 1.  Spring Show:   19 pieces were sold last weekend, averaging about $140 each.  Pretty decent for a holiday weekend.  Please get your replacements in on Saturday.  The show is looking a little empty.  (these are the kinds of problems we like to have)

2.  Summer Show:  Art in Changing Perspectives:  Acceptance letters will be sent out this week (if the envelope delivery comes in time).  Below is a show description by Show Chair, Anna Hagen.

You can take the theme literarily and explore the possibilities of  having the object in front of the picture plane or behind the picture plane, or you can work by giving the viewer a distinct impression of distance not in the ordinary sense, but creating an optical illusion with color or line that illustrates perspective changes.

Or you can take the title to mean changing points of view either by direction, or by subject matter, or by dictum.   An unusual point of view from the top looking down or from the floor looking up, or the inside looking out or from the back looking forward.  There are many possible interpretations, each personal to your own personal universe that you will create for this show.

For artists looking to explore the theme a little further, the 200’s Bay will be exhibiting Art to the EDGE,  – a less formal and more versatile way for you to present art work.  You can decide how and what works you would like to show.

You can exhibit more than one discipline – drawings, watercolors, and oils; sculptures and drawings.  It is more an installation than regimented hanging.  You are free to hang your panel in any manner that you like – or chose not to use a panel and hang your work from the ceiling.

There will be very little supervision in Art to the Edge.  We will just try to help you implement your ideas.  Your imagination is your only limitation.

This show will be a wonderful diversity of creative ideas, as well as presentation.

Since we have only three weekends between shows, we are planning on having a couple of week night Site Prep shifts on Thursday/Friday, June 18/19 from 5:00 to 8:00PM, the same time that we have week night Checkout for the Spring Show.  You will receive a 50% bonus for working these shifts.  If you are interested in working, you can just show up.

3. Weekly Craft Fair in Conjunction with the BWAC art exhibits:  Until or unless NYCreates gets funding for this fair, BWAC will organize a weekly Craft Fair on the esplanade at 499 Van Brunt.  It will be open on the same days and times as the BWAC art shows. BWAC will not charge any sales commission.  The NYCreates tables, chairs, umbrellas and stands will be available on a first come/first served basis.  The Craftspeople will be responsible to take out and return all supplied materials like carts, tables, chairs…Setup will be from 10:30 to noon each day.  Take down will be from 6 to 6:30 each day.  The Craftspeople will be responsible for collecting and paying all sales tax. The Craftspeople will have to join BWAC and pay the $100/calendar year membership fee as well as $20 in cash each weekend they participate.

If you need more information please call Bob at 646-552-6640.

Enjoy!

Artists in Brooklyn command a unique place in the world and our borough hosts one of the highest concentrations of resident artists anywhere. The artists selected for this exhibition have a history of living and being informed by the world around them combined with a dedication to their vision.  The choice of artists reflects wide ranging points of view as well as varied styles and materials. This variety is the natural outgrowth of artists whose work does not reflect the current trends so much as their own belief in following “inner”  instead of “outer” career directions.  Among the exhibitors are Audrey Anastasi, Joseph Anastasi, C. Bangs, Anders Knutsson, Leon Nicholas Kalas, Louise P. Sloane, Stephen Basso, Ellie Winberg and Mauricio Morillas and Dan Marino.

The exhibition space is set in dramatic custom town houses, featuring 18 foot ceilings; the works reflect the newly emerging spirit of Brooklyn amidst the historic Red Hook neighborhood backdrop.  This exhibition has been sponsored by Prudential, Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Brooklyn, NY and curated by Leon Nicholas Kalas, a Brooklyn Independent curator.

MEMBERS’ NEWS

From John B. Conroy:

Attention all artists – especially those who have web sites.  This is to inform you of a  banking and mail fraud (scam) targeting artists.

Several of us have been contacted by a Susan Miles, representing herself as a potential client.  After negotiating with you to purchase some of your art, she advises you that she and her husband are moving to South Africa, and she is in Texas expecting a baby.  Susan ‘freight forwarder’ may event contact you about picking up your art.

Susan then advises that her husband has made a mistake and is sending both the payment of the art and for the services of the ‘freight forwarder.’  She asks you kindly to cash the check take your fee and send a check to the freight forwarder.  At this point hit the delete button, your potential client is a scam artist.

Do not be fooled – this is a basic scam, and the check that you received will be ‘stopped paid’ and you will eventually owe your bank the full amount of the check.  I have contacted the nation US Postal Service’s Fraud task force and am waiting for further feedback since in today’s mail I received the check.  If you receive a check, do not cash or deposit it.  If possible, do not touch the check since there may be finger prints that could be identified.  When receiving such a request from someone you do not know, first insist on the person’s phone number and address.  This would allow you to track the person and the request; if the request is a scam, most likely you will not hear further from this party.

Even if your bank tells you that the check has “cleared’ the scam artist has 30 days from the receipt of their bank statement to stop payment on this check, and this is how they get their money.  If you mail them your check or send them your art, you will loose the value of your art and/or be responsible for the entire check amount that you received.

If you receive another Email from this party – hold your temper – and hit the delete button.  Do not respond further.  Instead, Contact the national Postal Inspector’s office at 1-877 876 2455, prompt # 4 for the Fraud taskforce; or go to www.usps.com/postalinspectors .  If you call in the AM you may reach a live person. Please do this if in any way you have been further involved financially.  Request that they send you a complaint-filling package and so you can enclose all Emails, check etc.

The US Postal Inspector’s office is interested in all fraud complaints and they will direct you accordingly.  Even if you don’t receive a check and had deleted this scam, you are encouraged to file a complaint through this website listed above, or you can go to www.ic3.com , which is a liaison group with the FBI and white collar crime enforcement.  Also, you can look at www.fakechecks.org for additional information.

From Joanna Reynolds, Assistant to the Executive Director, Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership    www.myrtleavenue.org  :

I am writing to you about a project that I am working on for MARP’s 10th Anniversary.  We are beginning the process of putting together a community archive of Myrtle Avenue, focusing on the neighborhoods of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, that captures the past, present and future through oral histories, images, original artwork, collage, found objects, personal artifacts, photographs, handwritten documents, stories, recordings, creative interpretations, receipts, menus, and mappings of life on Myrtle Avenue.

This archive will become a ttime capsule representing the past, present and future of Myrtle Avenue’s public life in order to preserve it for future generations. In September, the contents of the time capsule will be displayed either at the Brooklyn Historical Society or in a space somewhere in the Myrtle Avenue community as a celebration of Myrtle and MARP’s 10th Anniversary.

As Brooklyn-based artists I am reaching out to you for your ideas and creative contributions to our time capsule. Whether you have or would like to create an artwork for this project or have items/photographs/stories etc. that you would like to contribute as well.
