There was no newsletter last week because of the July 4th holiday. As a result, some of the accumulated submissions may have dates that are already obsolete. My apologies for that, but I’ve included all that were sent to me anyway, just to give attention to the events and activities that they cover. — Marvin
IMPORTANT DATES
July 18: Slightly in Seine, Screening Room Program, 3PM
July 19: Twelfth Night, Communicable Arts productions, 2PM
How to Get Started in Web Design, free seminar by Noble Desktop, 2 to 4PM
FROM THE PRESIDENT
1. Summer Show: Art in Changing Perspectives: The show looks absolutely great – we have some terrific new members, and Art to the Edge gives Bay 2 an energetic and fresh look. Our Featured Artists exhibits are spectacular. Thanks to all of you who worked so hard to make it look so good. Special thanks to Jon Bunge and especially to Anna, who had the vision.
Attendance and sales were a little disappointing. 800 people attended the show over opening weekend, but they were very generous. Contributions at the door were up 35%. Art sales continue to run about 20% less than last year.
2. Free Seminar: Noble Desktop is doing a free a seminar at BWAC in the screening room on Sunday, July 19th from 2 to 4 P.M. on How to Get Started in Web Design. Please pass the word. Great participation from BWAC will generate additional workshops at BWAC in the future. Currently one additional seminar – Introduction to Adobe Photoshop is scheduled for Saturday, October 24th from 2 to 4 P.M.
Noble Desktop provide exceptional computer graphics training in web design, print design, and video editing. They teach Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro classes on a rolling basis in Soho. Nobel Desktop was recently named the 4th highest-rated Adobe Certified Training Center in the world. Visit their website at http://www.nobledesktop.com
3. Words of Color: Acceptance letters will be sent out by the end of July. Please see Fritz and Carlo’s description below.
4. Reduced Membership Fee and Work for New Members: For the last remaining 2009 show, new members need only pay a $50 membership fee and work 12 hours.
Enjoy!

MEMBERS’ NEWS
From Fall Show Co-Chairs Steven (Fritz) Weiss and Carlo Grassini about Words of Color:
This is a narrative show about the Words and the Colors of Art. It is open to all medium of art, performance and word requiring only your imagination. But above all it will require that you submit a narrative with your work in order to be hung on the center aisles, although we would prefer every panel have a narrative. Your narrative can be one word to one page long. If your narrative is an integrated into your work it is not necessary to submit a separate narrative. The narrative can be a statement, poem, or story.
Further to the Edge: Like the Summer Show, the 200’s Bay will allow total freedom of, what, where and how your work is displayed on your panel. You can have as many works with or without frames as you can hang. You even choose your own panel. We encourage more members to take advantage of this opportunity.
If you need an extra large panel to present your work, please submit your Images, Words, thoughts, ideas and suggestions to steven_weiss@verizon.net and cart2gonow@nyc.rr.com .
The Words of Color speculates, insinuates and attempts to define the discourse of the essential elements of Art as the Word and Word as the Art: Color, Balance, Texture, Image, Song, Performance, Dance, Poem, Emotion, Concept:
This is an example:
He sat fixated
No stirring about
Almost breathless
His face against the paned view-scape of this morning’s world
His face seemed to be sculpted by the dance of sunbeams across his face
The windswept currents of leaf-dance
Ablaze in reds, oranges and yellows
Intermixed within an endless assortment
The many shades of umber
And in the background a brilliant blue enveloped
The many caricatures of white pillow like creatures
Available in all sizes and shapes
In the distance the trumpeting of snow geese
The sharp blurting call of mallards, teals, canvasbacks and wood ducks
While close enough almost to touch
A chorus of mockingbirds, cardinals and chickadees
Chimed in to complete this morning’s performance of autumnal beauty
Fritz (Steven) Weiss

Hello to all BWAC artists from the cool Catskills! We still have some space this summer and fall for pioneer artists-in-residence at Rosemary Farm. This farm is the new property of Dawn Robyn Petrlik (spring show chair) and will eventually be a full fledged artist’s retreat and horse rescue, but it is still in the process of being converted. Special invitation for BWAC members to come and experience the farm for free. The basic proposal is this; you work half the day (morning or afternoon) and then you can create art for half the day. Contribute towards food, both buying and making. There are a variety of jobs that need to be done here and a myriad of beautiful places to paint, draw, photograph, or just enjoy. We have horses, hickens,
roosters, rabbits, dogs and cats on the farm as well. Please write for more details and to discuss available dates.

Call for artists. PLG Community Mural Project: Lincoln Road And Flatbush Avenue Surrounding The Stalled “Tower” Project
Dates: Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, 2009
Theme: This mural is intended to feature the diversity of visual arts produced by Brooklyn-based artists in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and vicinity, and the diversity of the neighborhood itself.
Scope: The mural will be painted on both the Lincoln Road and Flatbush Avenue temporary construction fences surrounding the stalled “tower project.” The fencing consists of particle board sheets and is divided into several panels approximately 7 feet wide X 8 feet high.
Each artist will be assigned one panel. Consideration will be given to requests for larger spaces, but we can not guarantee to honor such requests.
PLG Arts will prime the fence with white acrylic primer, photo-document the process and artwork, and provide up to $30.00 reimbursement for materials for those who provide receipts dated between August 1st and September 12th, 2009. We apologize, but will be unable to reimburse anyone who does not provide receipts.
Please note: This is not a paid commission, but rather an opportunity for artists who reside in the community to make a positive impact in the neighborhood through their art. There is no honorarium or other remuneration for participation in the project beyond the materials reimbursement noted above.
Restrictions: The only conditions imposed by the owners of the construction site are that the mural’s content and flavor will not be offensive to any person or group. It is also understood that neither Park Tower (the owners) nor PLG Arts will be responsible for any damage to the mural.
The mural will be temporary in nature because construction could resume at any time and, in any case, the particle board fence will eventually deteriorate. We think that the ephemeral nature of this project is a plus-not a drawback.
If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Robert Marvin immediately at: bmarvin@plgarts.org or phone 718.284.3224
PLG Arts promotes the arts, supports local artists, and builds community through celebrating the vibrant creativity of Prospect Lefferts Gardens and the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods. The PLG Arts Community Mural Project is funded in part with a grant from the Citizens Committee of New York City.
